Book Marketing?

Marketing? You mean to tell me I spent all this time writing but there’s still more work to be done? Marketing?!?

No doubt, the thought of marketing intimidates most fiction writers (at least those of us who are “normal” – i.e., introverts!). But marketing is a necessary part of being a successful author. And now that I’ve dabbled in it, I’ll admit it isn’t as terrifying as I’d imagined.

To date, I’ve done three interviews – one live (via telephone) and the other two via written response. The live interview was with Melinda Gipson, editor of Leesburg Lifestyle Magazine. What was supposed to be a blurb about THE WAYWARD SPY in the February issue has turned into a full-page interview for the March issue. Melinda and I hit it off and had a nice conversation about our careers, my writing journey, and THE WAYWARD SPY.

The two other interviews are blog interviews. The first, due out in February, is with a fellow author, Brandie June. Her debut novel, GOLD SPUN, is a fresh retelling of the Rumpelstiltskin tale through the miller daughter’s point of view (due out 5/11/21). The second interview, due out 3/8/2021, is with Karin Beery, an author and book blogger. I will post links to the interviews when they go live.

More to come…58 days until publication.

Publishers Weekly Review – THE WAYWARD SPY

I’m thrilled to share the first publishing industry trade review for The Wayward Spy. Publishers Weekly calls it a “gripping debut and series launch….Ouellette, a former CIA analyst, brings plenty of authenticity to this fast-paced spy thriller. Readers will look forward to Maggie’s further adventures.”

The Wayward Spy – More Great News

THE WAYWARD SPY is one of 42 novels featured (alongside a book by Harlan Coben, international bestselling author with 75 million+ books in print!) in Publishers Weekly “Grab-a-Galley” sweepstakes. The sweepstakes offers booksellers, publishing professionals, book bloggers, librarians, and reading enthusiasts a chance to read novels before their publication date.

In addition to Harlan Coben, I’m in great company with several other bestselling writers and two of my fellow CamCat Books authors, Elizabeth Chatsworth (The Brass Queen, 1/12/21) and A.S. Thornton (Daughter of the Salt King, 2/2/21).

The Wayward Spy – Featured in Publishers Weekly

Exciting news! THE WAYWARD SPY will be featured in Publishers Weekly’s Mystery/Thriller issue on November 16th. Publishers Weekly, widely considered “the bible of the book business,” is a weekly news magazine focused on the international book publishing business. This is great pre-publication exposure for THE WAYWARD SPY. And I’ll be in good company. Two of my fellow CamCat Books‘ authors also will be featured in the Mystery/Thriller issue – Michael Bradley (DEAD AIR – a terrific thriller!) and Pat Broderick (DEAD ON MY FEET – coming in 2021).

The Wayward Spy – Audiobook News

Today, my editor emailed me four auditions from actors vying to narrate The Wayward Spy audiobook. All are established actors with hundreds of audiobook credits. It was exciting and more than a little surreal to hear strangers read my own words aloud. Each actor was fantastic, but we can only choose one to bring The Wayward Spy to life. If you love audiobooks, you will love listening to this story. I can’t wait!

Book Deal!

I am thrilled to announce that I have signed a contract with CamCat Books for my first spy thriller, The Wayward Spy. Based on my time working on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., the story revolves around Maggie Jenkins, an intelligence analyst who senses a cover-up when her CIA-spy fiancé is murdered. Let’s just say she doesn’t sit back and let the guys handle it!

Many thanks to Sue Arroyo and Helga Schier at CamCat Books for signing me. To my agent, Steve Hutson at Wordwise Media, thank you for your persistence and guidance. And to my friend and brilliant independent editor, Elaine Ash, “thank you” isn’t enough to express my gratitude for your vision and insistence that this story should be on bookshelves. Dan, Andrew, Shawn, and Bryan – there aren’t words to express my thanks for all your support, in all its forms. And many thanks to my beta readers, especially fellow writers, Brian Drake and Jenni Milne.

We’re just getting started, so stay tuned for more details! In the meantime, bookmark my website (www.susanouellette.com) and follow me on Facebook (fb.me/SusanOuelletteAuthor), Twitter (https://twitter.com/smobooks), and Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/susanobooks/).
